Social It Yourself - Are You Setting Up Your Social Media Platforms Too Early?

One of the first things small business owners do when starting a business is set up their social media.  On one hand it makes sense - it's a free and easy way to quickly get your business "out there".  However if you're wanting to create an effective social media strategy for your business the logical time to set up (or update) your social media is once you've created your buyer personas.

Your buyer personas help you establish a clear picture of your ideal audience by revealing their needs, motivations and limitations.  This intel is invaluable as you set up (or update) your social media platforms

If you're planning to Social It Yourself - SIY Consider These 3 Things:

1. Which ones?  This is a question we get asked by small business owners everyday. There are so many options Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and the list goes on. Understanding your audience and where they spend their time will assist you to determine which ones are going to be the best ones to reach them and the ones you need to be active on.  You don't have to be on all of them.  We recommend it's better for businesses to start with just one or two social media platforms, get them right and grow from there.  I've written a couple of blogs to help businesses choose which ones are right for them.(The best social media platforms for your business.   Facebook? 2. Complete the set up. It may seem obvious however we see it all the time - sections on business pages left blank.  A Facebook Business Page without the About Us section filled in or a LinkedIn Company Page that doesn't highlight the businesses areas of specialties. An incomplete page gives the impression of an incomplete business.  It's important to complete all the sections as you want your customers to know about you and how you can help them.  Use the word limit.  Use the image opportunities. Use the contact details.   

3.Talk to your audience. Your buyer persona identified your ideal audiences needs and motivations - their pain points.  You want to use those insights when it comes to how you talk to your audience when setting up your social media platforms.  The content of your About Us section will need to talk to them specifically and in a language they can relate to. It will need to be relevant and helpful and explain how your product or service provides the best solution for whatever their problem is.
